Die Walküre, opera by Wagner
Second part of the Ring cycle.
Die Walküre is the first day of Der Ring des Nibelungen, after the "first night" of the Das Rheingold.
Created in 1870, in Munich, the second part of Wagner's Ring cycle depicts gods and mortals caught up in their complex intrigues of love and power: Sieglinde and Siegmund, incestuous twins born of the union of Wotan with a mortal; Fricka, who is Wotan's wife; Brünnhilde and the other Valkyries; and the warrior virgins charged with helping Wotan to raise an army of heroes.
The third and final act is perhaps the most contrasting, from the initial rousing ride of the Valkyries to Brünnhilde's final sweet sleep.
