German opera Unter den Linden

A fine old opera house.

The opera is housed in one of the most beautiful buildings on the boulevard Unter den Linden, and boasts an international reputation. The building, destined be the Royal Opera, was constructed between 1741 and 1743 to plans by Georg von Wenzeslaus Knobelsdorff.

The structure in the classic Prussian style was influenced by the classic English architecture that succeeded Palladio, recalling the form of a Corinthian temple. The interior decor is rococo, as in the Charlottenburg and Sanssouci Palaces.

Destroyed during the Second World War down to its foundation walls, the building was rebuilt between 1952 and 1955 in accordance with the original Knobelsdorff plans and fully restored between 1983 and 1986.

Many famous artists have performed at the Staatsoper. Karl Friedrich Schinkel created the famous stage set for The Magic Flute there, and Richard Strauss conducted there too. Even today, the big names still appear at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden to add to an impressive repertoire.
