Brandenburg Gate

Symbol of separation and reunification.
The Brandenburg Gate is the only gate to the City still standing, and like the Berlin Wall, symbolised the division of the City in two. Following German reunification, the gate was reopened on the 22nd of December 1989. It was decided to close it to traffic, so visitors could enjoy Pariser Platz in all its splendour.
Pariser Place was constructed during the reign of Friedrich Wilhelm I. Villas, embassies and the luxurious Hotel Adlon were built there, but were later destroyed during the Second World War.
Since the fall of the wall, internationally renowned architects have designed new buildings while preserving the architectural unity of the area. Thus, past and future now coexist in harmony.
